Children in York take to streets in Viking costumes

Children from primary schools across York donned Viking costumes in an effort to highlight the simplicity and safety of cycling in the city.

The celebration, organised by Sustrans' Bike It scheme, saw around 70 primary school pupils cycle three miles across York, starting at the Archbishop of York Junior School.

On its course, the cycling brigade also picked up Cycling Vikings from the Jorvik Afloat group, which aims to build a faithful Viking Longship replica.

The procession ended in the city's Parliament Square, where children were greeted by council staff with a range of cycle games.

As part of the day's celebrations, children and adults also formed a fancy dress parade. Prizes included a £50 voucher from Cycle Heaven and family tickets to the Jorvik Centre in York up for grabs for the best dressed Viking cyclist.

The Sustrans' Bike It scheme works with 500 schools every year, and organised the day of cycling activities to promote cycling as an alternative method of travel in York.

Sustrans' Vicki Hill, the event organiser, said: "York has great cycling routes and links to schools that will often get you where you are going much more quickly than a car could.

"This ride is all about showing children and their parents how easy and safe it can be to get to school or the shops by bike - and having a lot of fun at the same time of course!"

Graham Titchener, Cycling City York's programme manager, added: "Events like this show people that it really is possible to switch to two wheels and make cycling part of their everyday routine."
