Top Ideas for Making a Fabulous Pirate Costume

Dressing up as a pirate is great fun and it is all the rage since Captain Jack Sparrow hit the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean.  Dressing up as a pirate is also easy and can be a very inexpensive costume to create because most of the items you need for your costume can either be found at home or at your local thrift shop.  The great thing is that a pirate costume is suitable for both men and women and you can make it sexy, flamboyant, or rascally.  You can make it anything you want and your imagination can take your costume anywhere you want to go.

First you are going to need the right clothes for a pirate costume and that starts with a white shirt.  You can make this shirt as fancy as possible, with baggy sleeves and even frills.  Women can get an even fancier shirt and no matter who you are be sure to leave the top few buttons undone when you wear it.  Next you will need a vest to wear over your shirt.  This should be plain, without any prints, and ideally will be red, blue, or black.  If you can only find a white vest, then you can get some fabric dye and dye it.  A striped vest will also work.

Jagged pirate pants

Next you will need pants or a skirt if you are a woman and wish to wear a sexier pirate costume.  The pants should be black or brown and either tight or very baggy.  You can then cut the legs off just below the knees.  When cutting make them look jagged and shredded so that they will look worn.  Women can do the same with a black or brown skirt, just start with a skirt that is fairly long.  If you are going for the sexy pirate look, then be sure to use a tight skirt.

Now you can walk around with a fancy white shirt, vest, and cut-off pants and people might be able to guess what you are, but when you add the pirate accessories there will be no doubt.  The first of these accessories are the bandanna and hat.  The bandanna is mandatory and should be red or black.  You tie this around your head, under which you can wear a wig if you wish or if you have longer hair you can put a few braids in.  Then if you wish to wear a pirate-style hat you can wear that over the bandanna.

Next you will need a belt or sash.  A sash can be made of any scarf and should also be red or black.  If you are wearing a belt, then be sure it is wide and black or brown, depending on your outfit, and be sure that it has a big buckle.  For jewellery you can wear gold hoops and you can also wear big, gaudy rings and a gold chain.  Pirates like to be showy and the more obvious your jewellery is the better.  Then all you need to add are tall black or brown boots, a sword, and even an eye patch if you wish and your costume will look authentic and complete.

Your home might just be a treasure trove for any or all of the items you will need to create the most fantastic pirate costume.  That old pair of pants hanging at the back of your closet.  Those old earrings from twenty years ago.  Your parents or grandparent might have some great things tucked away in their homes and your local thrift shop is sure to have some great things that will be ideal for making a pirate costume that looks as if it came right out of the films.  If you find that you are missing anything after you have exhausted these avenues, then you can always turn to your local discount stores or your local party supply store.  These places will be sure to finish off your pirate costume so that you can attend your costume event in absolute pirate style.  So, what are you waiting for?  Get that imagination working overtime and create the pirate costume of the decade.
