Fancy dress contestants steal Unusual Miss World 2009
May 2 saw an event take place sure to have pleased the fashion un-conscious as the Alternative Miss World rolled ahead for yet another year of inventive and wacky fancy dress costumes.Since 1972, the Alternative Miss World has rejected its better known counterpart's fascination with beauty and instead encouraged contestants to show their creativity off with their outfits, giving them free reign to transform themselves in front of the audience into unrehearsed representations of the event's theme. This year, the spectacle's theme is the four elements: air, water, fire, earth and one addition - the void.
Following the same general schedule as the official Miss World competition, the Alternative Miss World invites contestants to take part in demonstrating their dressmaking and fancy dress selections across daywear, swimwear and eveningwear categories - though this competition saw contestants more likely to dress up on the night than displaying what they may traditionally wear at that time.
Displays varied from the inventive to the outrageous, with one contestant engaging with a hospital theme that ended with the mock birth of Africa.
Event winner Miss Fancy Chance stole the vote when she was lifted by her hair into the air to perform arabesques suspended above the audience. Dressed in a beautiful robe, Miss Chance was awarded competition creator Andrew Logan's self-designed broken mirror crown, as well as a sceptre and square orb. These prizes will remain in her possession until the competition runs once more in three or four years.
