Fancy dress cyclists ride for charity in Devon
Hundreds of cyclists embarked on an annual bike ride in North Devon at the weekend in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
Of the 243 cyclists, 80 per cent were in fancy dress costumes in a range of colours and drawing on a variety of figures from history and popular culture.
Some cyclists were dressed in contemporary lite-up and new rave garb, with neon hues and shutter specs abounding. Others chose the opposite end of the historical spectrum entirely, opting for medieval costumes. Some even came dressed as classic superheroes, much to the delight of the many children watching and participating.
However, first prize in the fancy dress competition, went to Dan Taylor and Paul Wynn, who came dressed as the 118 118 running men - complete with retro wig and tash sets to make their outfits even more authentic.
The competition was judged by Jean Tratt, Mayoress of Honiton in Devon, and town crier Dave Retter. After the award was handed out to Mr Taylor and Mr Wynn, the race began at The Otter Inn in Weston and passed through Plymtree, Whimple and Feniton before returning to its starting point.
Adrian Phillips, who organised the event, praised the cyclists, who took part in the race, saying: "We had three tandems in the line-up and cyclists travelled from as far afield as Dublin, Manchester and Suffolk to take part."
He also expressed his support for everyone involved in the event, including two back-up drivers and St John Ambulanceman Mike Layzell (who co-ordinated first aid cover).
