Fancy dress fans join London Marathon athletes
Sunday's London Marathon will see a multitude of contenders, from professional athletes to part-time enthusiasts, take part in the 26-mile challenge.
The world-famous race provides an excellent opportunity for runners to test their determination and for participants to raise money for worthy causes. Many runners chose to take part in fancy dress, particularly when they are asking for sponsorship and this year's event looks set to be no exception. According to race organisers, the marathon is one of the largest fund raising events in the world.
Last year saw a runner in a Bananaman costume gather much encouragement from the crowd and finance director Andy Smith hopes that he will receive a similar boost as he takes part in fancy dress for the first time. Although this will be his fourth London Marathon, the Bury Free Press Reports, he has chosen to run in fancy dress this year and is being sponsored by his colleagues for his efforts.
The first London Marathon took place in 1981 and since then its participants have increased from 6,000 runners to around 35,000. The course starts at three separate points around Blackheath and finishes on The Mall. This year's event will take place on April 26 and the official charity is The Children's Trust.
