What Do Zombies Wear?

Worked To Death Zombie Costume

Halloween is one of those fun and wholesome holidays as a kid, getting to go door-to-door retrieving candy and stuffing your face full of said candy hours later. As a kid, going to a costume store to get your costume was just as fun as the trick or treating. But, as an adult, Halloween is a slightly different matter. The parties last longer, the refreshments are normally on the alcoholic side, and the mischief is a little more, well, mischievous. As for the costume, the best is sexy fancy dress, taking on the role of “seductress” to an otherwise harmless costume idea. You can basically find a “sexy” costume for any kind of theme you can think of: skeletons, dogs, even fruit. But even then, there are those that are even more popular than sexing it up in general.

For some, the idea of being a pirate brings up images of being sweaty, wet, and hungry. But for the rest of us, and the costume industry, being a pirate is all about stockings, feathers, and sexiness. A very popular costume, it’s seen as sexy because of recent movie franchises around being dangerous and forbidden, two very important factors in a successful sexy costume. Also in that category, you’ll find sexy Robin, sexy pimp, and sexy Padme Amidala costumes, strictly for the dangerously sexiness of these and many other costumes. These are popular among your older females, maybe late 20’s to early 30’s.

“Innocent” and “sexy” have become intertwined, and the best costume for this little theme has got to be sexy schoolgirl. Pushing aside the obvious creepiness, though, this is a very fun costume to not only wear but play out, acting out the innocent routine the best. Other innocent yet sexy costumes fairly popular are such themes as sexy alice in wonderland, sexy angel, and saving the best for last, sexy nun. On the other end of the spectrum, though, the Overly Sexy theme for costumes are just as popular. Things like sexy maid, sexy nurse, and basically any sexy superheroes. These costumes are quite possibly the most popular, simply for the point of them being “sexy” and “believable“.

In modern Halloween fashion, there are the fancy dress costumes that are dead on Halloween directed, and the sexy category is no exception. Here you will find the most popular of any costume, not just sexy, and that’s the witch costume. The category of witch has many themes, including devil witch, witch queen, and even candy corn witch, but the thing they can all agree on is that sexy witch is the most sold out costume for Halloween. Runner ups include sexy skeletons, sexy cats, and of course the sexy devil. The other seemingly obvious category of women’s sexy costumes are sexy men occupations costumes. For example, most popular in this is the sexy sailor, making the navy a real sexy place to work. More costumes in this category are sexy pilot, sexy policewoman, and even a sexy lumberjack.

Of the many Halloween traditions, most of their origins are rather obscured by history. While some may be rooted in ancient pagan beliefs, others seem to come from a later time such as during the medieval period. Of course, pumpkins may be traditional because they tend to ripen during the fall and are readily available. While some explanations may be easy to come by, others are still shrouded in mystery. For example, where exactly did the pointed witches’ hat come from?
The classic witch or old hag on a broom has been a Halloween tradition for many centuries, but the unusual pointed hat is one of the most common features found in paintings that go back hundreds of years, but does not evolve from the Medieval times as other common features of the witch or “old hag” image that is so common.
During Medieval times, witches were depicted in painting wearing a number of different types of hats as was common in the day for many people. New types of hats were churned out on a regular basis thanks to the fashion trends of the times. The curious pointed hat seems to have sprung out in the 15th century when tall, pointed dunce’s hats became quite popular in London, one of the largest cities in the world at that time. As fashion trends generally start in the cities before moving to the countryside, by the time the pointed hat was all the rage on the farm, it had long fallen out of fashion in the city.
A woman of the countryside who wore the pointed hat would often go to the city to sell the natural herbs used in medicines for the healing of wounds or internal disturbances. These women were considered wise in the ways of the natural forces of the Earth. It was not long after when the witch trials started and a woman wearing a pointed hat was often accused of having fallen into the “black arts”. Before long, a pointed hat was as associated with a witch as often as horns were a symbol of the devil. The sign of servitude to Satan was often the symbol of the pointed hat that these women wore.
When the witch trials passed and the knowledge of the origin of the pointed hat had faded, artists of the 19th century or Victorian times as they are often called would be depicted wearing the famed pointed hats with broad, black brims riding a broom and sporting a large wart on their nose. Such symbolism became so common it was accepted as the norm and thus the pointed hat is now forever associated with witches and Halloween.
Today, those who still practice the ancient art that witches were accused of do not wear the famed pointed hats, but instead mostly go bareheaded and are more in line in appearance with the old pagan look of pre-Christian Britain and Western Europe. However, on Halloween many of them honor their ancestors by donning the famed black brimmed pointed hat as tribute to the witches of the past.

Various movies that have been made on werewolves have fueled and peaked people’s interest the more. While the movies have been both entertaining and at the same time fearsome, it has begged the question of werewolves actually existing. Indeed, the stories of werewolves is a legend that many come to believe as true from the many movies and books they have read on the subject, and what is more, the movies and books seem to endorse the veracity of these creatures. However, the question remains, do werewolves really exist and if it does not, how did the legend become so widespread and accepted?

Werewolf is one of the favourite fancy dress costumes for Halloween

Before venturing into how the legend seemed to start, it must be noted that werewolves were believed to be humans who changed into wolves or other animals of their fancy. They were known to be very cruel in killing other humans or animals for fun. People, based on their confessions and gruesome incidences around neighborhoods were believed to turn to wolves during the full moon and wreak havoc on the community by killing other humans and livestock. These people on turning to werewolves were endowed with supernatural powers that made them to lust for blood and become serial killers, killing as many as they wanted and sometimes eating their victims or eating killed livestock where it was not possible to kill any human. They were believed to recite an incantation under favorable conditions after rubbing themselves with a magical ointment made from special herbs, before putting on wolf clothing or belt that made them werewolves. However, it was believed that no werewolf could turn himself back into a man by himself except by another werewolf, but a man could easily become a werewolf and be seized by this satanic hound that killed wantonly.

Later in the early 1500s in Europe, many self-confessed werewolves were captured and executed, although most of those executed by them were also known to be serial killers and criminals. Among these was a German, Peter Stubbe who was allegedly arrested after killing some livestock at the point of turning back to a human. He was said to have confessed to committing incest with his daughter and eating human flesh, which made his daughter and wife to be executed too after him for being in the know concerning his activities. There was also the case of a Frenchman, Gilles Garnier, who was also executed in 1573 for being a serial killer after confessing to being a werewolf; and there was the execution of other men like Pierre Burgot and Michel Verdun in 1521 for allegedly being werewolves. There were other executions across Europe of werewolves with the rise of Christianity, because they were considered Satanists.

It was believed that the legend of werewolves started with Ovid in a Greek mythology where Lycaon gave human flesh to Jupiter for food, and on discovery that it was human flesh Jupiter had to curse him and turn him into a werewolf, and this became the beginning of werewolves or lycanthrope.

The Halloween night of October 31st is becoming more entertaining than scarring in these modern times. Many people, mainly mostly youngsters, used to be frightened as the Halloween Night approached, and the celebration has been captured in many Halloween movies. Halloween movies have always been very spooky and frightening; however, many of the newer movies focus on a lighter, less frightening theme. Many Halloween movies are now very entertaining and hilarious, and many others blend a mixture of hilarious fun with some spice of spooky plots. We will discuss some funny Halloween films you and your family will find very interesting and entertaining on your Halloween night in the house:

Beetle juice

Beetle Juice

This film is played out by Michael Keaton and he both frightens and makes you laugh out at the same time. He acts very naughty at the home of the O’Hara family and playfully spoils things around the home. The movie gets spooky sometimes, but overall it is very entertaining and interesting.

Zombieland

Zombieland

This is a movie that you would find both enlightening also a little contradicting. Yes, it sheds light on the vampire ways of life of the dead, also seems to discredit some concepts in earlier core vampire movies. It is a movie that children and parents would want to watch together, and while it plays a little on romance, it also gets frightening with the walking dead on the rampage.

Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the dead

This Halloween movie postulates that zombies and vampires feed on the human brain, and the best way not to be a victim is not to have a brain. It is a very funny and romantic film, and while many people would laugh at the trend of the storyline and how it is developed, many would shriek in horror at some acts that could really terrify.

Haunted Honeymoon

Haunted honeymoon

Have you ever imagined getting lost in a haunted house before? This movie will give you a feel of what it is to be left in a haunted house where werewolves and vampires have a field day. The movie is also laced with satire and humor with the feature of top comedians doing their act in this Halloween movie production. It is a must watch, but if you are a teenager, make sure to have an adult by you and be ready to laugh as you might be to shed a tear.

Scary Movie

Scary movie

This is a film for Halloween, and it seems to induce laughter rather than to frighten. The Scary Movie is packed with a lot of gimmicks that would make you mock vampires and zombies and their goblin folks. This movie features a lot of scenes and shoddy special effects to make you laugh uncontrollably in your seats, and be sure to take a leak before watching it because you might not want to risk missing anything in the movie.

These Halloween movies, among many others, are very good to watch on Halloween nights with your family and friends. You will find them very entertaining and hilarious; but then, also be ready to see some spooky action that will remind you that you are watching something related to the Halloween phenomenon.

The most popular Halloween 2011 costumes were Angry Birds, Black Swan, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Where’s Waldo. All of these costumes reflect a sort of geeky side to those who put them on. Sure everyone wants to be a super hero, but let’s be honest, the adults who put them were or likely still are comic book geeks. And of course everyone likes a popular game like Angry Birds, but it surely is a little quirky to put on a costume. Where’s Waldo, well this one can be played up for a geeky guy or a sexy nerd girl. It is a playful fancy dress costume that shows off your personality in fun way. Therefore, it’s no surprise that all of these costumes made the most popular for 2011.

Captain America Fancy Dress - one of the most popular Halloween costumes in 2011

Some of the other most popular Halloween 2011 costumes for adults included the ever-sexy vampire costumes for both the men and the women. Most likely fueled by the popular vampire shows and books, these costumes never go out of style and remain popular year after year. Nobody can resist the allure of a vampire. Other adult costumes topping the list were Pan Am characters, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga, although folks weren’t as gaga for her as they were in years past. Star Wars is another ever-popular costume for adults is Cat Woman. The 80s never goes out of style and was a popular hit this year for adults as was surprisingly – Indians and characters from The Wizard of Oz.

The most popular Halloween 2011 costumes for children came in with Harry Potter at the top. Following Harry Potter are princess-themed costumes along with two comic action themed costumes, Green Lantern and Captain America. Elmo was another popular costume. A classic game turned costume – twister – made a fun costume for lots of kids this year.

Toward the bottom of the list for most popular Halloween 2011 costumes were a mix of classic and new costumes as old shows became new again. Wolverine, Smurfs, Winnie the Pooh and Transformers, Bumblebee were all popular costumes this year. Who knows, some of the parents may have dressed up in similar costumes 20 years ago, but that is half the fun of dressing up for Halloween. There is always a bit of nostalgia on Halloween night as people dress up. The fun is in becoming someone completely different for a night.

Dressing up in ghoulish garb and knocking on doors is a classic activity when 31 October comes around. Here are some relatively harmless tricks to play on those who are ill prepared or too tight to give you the treats you desire. Remember, stay away from elderly people who can get scared during this night and only perform tricks on those you know who should have been better prepared! Coin stuck to the doorstep If an ill prepared miser sends you packing without a treat you can test their stinginess with a simple trick. Take super glue, fix a coin to their doorstep and ring the doorbell. Now hide quickly and watch. Guffaw as the home owner tries desperately to pick up the glued coin. Priceless!
Halloween trick or treating is a fun time for everyone.

Coin stuck to the doorstep

If an ill prepared miser sends you packing without a treat you can test their stinginess with a simple trick. Take super glue, fix a coin to their doorstep and ring the doorbell. Now hide quickly and watch. Guffaw as the home owner tries desperately to pick up the glued coin. Priceless!

Detachable finger

Get a fake finger from a joke shop. Cover it in ketchup or fake blood and keep it in your hand. Ring the doorbell and shout ‘trick or treat!’ If they say they haven’t got anything for you courteously say ‘no problem’ and offer your hand for a shake. Leave them with your bloodied finger and leave as they scream.

Caramel onions

You’ve been told they don’t have a treat for you. That’s fine. Offer them a treat to break with tradition. Give them a caramel treat you’ve prepared earlier. If they’re daft enough to take one they’ll get an eye watering surprise. You need to coat your onions in caramel or chocolate. When they take a bite they’ll get a breath destroying shock. The friendly trick or treater can take chewing gum with them, but remember they didn’t give you any sweets!

The classic fake dog turd

If you’ve been left standing at the closed door of a house without any treats dropping in your bag then leave a dropping of your own on their doorstep. You can either buy a fake dog turd from a joke shop or make a nice and squidgy one by mixing flour and water with brown food colouring. Nothing quite says ‘you should have given me chocolate’ than leaving a chocolate coloured fake poo for them to stumble upon. Check out out full range of Halloween practical jokes here.

Say it with pumpkins

Prepare some specially carved pumpkins for the meanies who refuse to give you a treat. They knew it was Halloween, so they only have themselves to blame! Carve names like ‘Stingy’, ‘Misery guts’ or ‘Tight butt’ in the pumpkin and leave it as a strong reminder that next year they really should go the extra mile to amend their grumpy ways.

Glow in the dark name and shame

Buy some glow in the dark neon paint and prepare some special signage for those households that refuse to give out treats and get into the spooky spirit of Halloween. After the moody home owner has gone back into their house pop the strategically worded sign on their front door. This will stop other trick or treaters from wasting their time and let everyone know what a killjoy the inhabitant is.

Kiss it scarecrows

This takes some preparation but works wonders delivering a message to a miserable so and so that refuses to fill your treat sack. Make a scarecrow that can bend at the middle and set it up with its back facing the offending house’s front door. Pull the trousers of the scarecrow down and arrange two pumpkin quarters over the trousers to resemble a pair of butt cheeks. There you have it, a perfect pumpkin moon keeping with the spirit of Halloween the house owner failed to celebrate.

Whether you are attending a fancy dress party or your child is dressing up to go trick-or-treating, a fancy dress costume is a must. One of the most important parts of this costume is the make-up, which can give an air of authenticity to any costume so that you can scare the wits out of people – or at least get them talking. There are both general make-up tips as well as tips that are specific to the costume you choose to wear. Let’s start with the general tips, the ones you will need to use no matter what Halloween costume you wear. The first of these is to plan ahead.

Don’t wait until the last minute to choose your costume or to order/purchase your make-up. For one thing, you might not get what you want because the stock will be sold out. If you have to order your make-up, then you need to leave enough time for it to arrive. Not only do you have to plan ahead when it comes to choosing your costume and ordering your make-up, but you also have to plan ahead before applying your make-up. At the very least, you should study your face before you put on your make-up so that you can get an idea of what you want to do. This way you can avoid mistakes and get it done more quickly. However, keep in mind that even if you plan your make-up before you apply it, you might also get a new idea during the application. Go with it if it is something that works well. Be creative and have fun!

In line with the general tips, you might be wondering if you should put your make-up on before or after you have put on your costume. Well this depends on the type of costume you have and how you put it on. If you can step into it and pull it up or if you can easily pull it on and fasten it, then you can probably apply your make-up before you put on the costume. However, for those costumes that have to be pulled on over your head, you might want to put it on before you apply your make-up. If you are concerned about getting make-up on your costume, then simply drape a towel over your shoulders and tuck it into the neck of the costume. Your hair will also need protection from the make-up, but you can wrap a towel or a scarf around your hair to keep it back and covered.

What about specific make-up tips for costumes? Well, here let’s cover some of the most common ones. The vampire is quite easy and will begin with a pale face, made so by using white make-up or baby powder. Then you can darken your eyebrows black and line your eyes. Some drops of blood, fangs, and some facial lines in reddish-brown will complete the look. If you want to look like an old person you also need to start with a pale face as with the vampire. Then you can draw some facial lines in black and cover that lightly with baby powder. The witch is fun and easy. All you need to do is make your face green and draw some lines in black on your forehead and face. Remember that whenever you draw lines on your face to blend them in so that they look more realistic.

Getting your make-up just right will really add an air of authenticity to your costume and help you look and feel like the real thing. Of course, there are so many different costumes and you will need to consider the make-up for yours very carefully. There are bound to be tips out there that have not been covered here. Also, be sure to get make-up that is has been approved for safety so that you will not compromise your health. Then you can enjoy Halloween night in pure style and comfort and you will surely get plenty of positive comments and compliments as you celebrate the season.

First of all, this holiday is just loaded with superstitions. For instance, you had better not squash a spider on Halloween because if you see one it is really the spirit of a loved one there to watch over you. Have you ever wanted to meet a witch? Well, on Halloween night put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards and you just might. You can also ring a bell to scare away evil spirits. And of course, watch out for the white cat and don’t let it cross your path because that is bad luck. However, did you know that in the United States it is the black cat that is considered unlucky?

Did you know that if you have a deathly fear of Halloween you are said to have Samhainophobia? Samhain is one of the various alternative names for Halloween and others include Hallowtide, All Hallows Eve, the Feast of the Dead, and the Day of the Dead. The holiday is celebrated in many countries around the world, but our modern day celebration is based on ancient Celtic celebrations. In Welsh Halloween in Nos Calan Gaeaf and in English the correct spelling is actually Hallowe’en, though it is rarely spelled this way.

What about the Jack O’ Lantern? Well, this is a long-standing tradition of Halloween. The Jack O’ Lantern is carved out of a pumpkin these days, but did you know that it was traditionally carved out of a turnip in centuries gone by? These carved turnips and pumpkins are lit up with a candle, which is believed to keep evil spirits at bay. As for pumpkins, a whopping 99% of annual pumpkin sales are due to people buying pumpkins to be carved into Halloween jack O’ Lanterns. There are records regarding pumpkins and Jack O’ Lanterns, too. For instance, the record for the fastest carving of a pumpkin is held by Jerry Ayers from Baltimore, Ohio, who carved a pumpkin in a mere 37 seconds! How about this record? Port Elgin, Ontario in Canada holds the record for the largest pumpkin ever produced as it weighed in at 1446 pounds.

What about the colours for Halloween? Well orange and black are the traditional colours and they have meaning. Orange represents the harvest and black represents death and darkness. Also, did you know that there is no word in the dictionary that rhymes with orange? The locale of Spalding in Britain considers itself to be the pumpkin capital of Britain because David Bowman grows an incredible two million pumpkins annually.

All of these facts are interesting and amazing, but maybe best of all is that the modern tradition of Halloween and trick-or-treating has its roots in ancient Celtic tradition. In Ireland it was common for people to go door-to-door to ask for food contributions to the community feast. In Scotland children who went door-to-door to ask for treats had to perform a song or poem in order to get some. There are many variations, but to be sure the holiday has many fun facts that remain unknown to the masses. Now that you know some of these fascinating tidbits of information you can share them with family and friends, who will be very glad you did.

Scary films are a fixture of this time of year and there are many horror films that have become classics over the years. These include films such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street. However, while these films are great for those adults and older teens who want to be scared out of their wits, they are not appropriate for younger children. Instead, kids need Halloween films that are not so scary and fortunately there are plenty of those. For the pre-teens and teens there are some films that are ideal for Halloween. Tim Burton is the genius behind a number of these. There is his famous 1980s film Beetlejuice, which is one of his best films. Beetlejuice is the creepy dead guy who has to be stopped before he gets let out of the world of the dead. However, while these films are great for those adults and older teens who want to be scared out of their wits, they are not appropriate for younger children. Instead, kids need Halloween films that are not so scary and fortunately there are plenty of those.

Beetlejuice movie

For the pre-teens and teens there are some films that are ideal for Halloween. Tim Burton is the genius behind a number of these. There is his famous 1980s film Beetlejuice, which is one of his best films. Beetlejuice is the creepy dead guy who has to be stopped before he gets let out of the world of the dead. Another of Tim Burton’s wonderful films is the Nightmare Before Christmas, which, despite its title, is a wonderful Halloween film. Yet another Burton film is the Corpse Bride, in which a shy young man accidentally marries a dead woman. Aside from the genius of Tim Burton, there are the ever popular Harry Potter films, which are ideal for the Halloween season even if people watch them the year through. Another 1980s classic that is set at the time of Halloween is E.T. This cute little alien warmed the hearts of millions as he formed a bond with the boy Elliott.

Now, the above films are great for older kids who are not yet ready for the slasher and horror films that adults like to watch, but what about the young kids? Tim Burton films, Harry Potter, and even E.T. may be too scary for children who are very young. For these kids there is a wonderful collection of films that are suitable and that are totally fun. Disney along with Pixar created the fabulous film Monsters, Inc. This is a monster film that makes all monsters lovable – well almost all of them. Another fantastic Disney film that is perfect for Halloween is called Halloweentown and tells the story of three kids going to Halloweentown with their grandmother in order to learn witchcraft and beat the bad guy.

Scooby Doo movie

Finally, there is a round of fabulous films for really young children, although people of all ages truly love them. First of all, where would Halloween be without Charlie Brown and friends? It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a must to watch every year. There is also the wonderful Winnie the Pooh Heffalump Halloween, which features all the fun loving Winnie the Pooh characters that have been adored for generations. Then there are the films which are based on past television series, including good old Scooby Doo. Scooby and his gang of friends were always solving mysteries and catching nasty villains that liked to dress up as scary creatures. The film lives up to the show’s reputation. Another classic is the Addams Family, with a creepy yet eccentric family that is sure to liven up any Halloween.

There are plenty of fabulous Halloween films out there that are ideal for young children and older kids, kids who are too old for Winnie the Pooh, but too young for the adult films. Many of these films are classics that have stood the test of time. That means that they will be the perfect non-frightening films that will be sure to entertain your kids this coming Halloween. A night of trick-or-treating followed by some good Halloween films is the ideal way to spend the haunting season so choose your films today and have the best Halloween ever.
