The specific identity of Bloody Mary varies. Some claim she is a medieval European noblewoman who killed children and used their blood as a youth potion. In other versions, she is a long-dead witch or even a contemporary accident victim. The name “Bloody Mary” originated with an unpopular 16th-century English queen who burned heretics at the stake. The term “bloody” has long been used as a mild obscenity in England. However, the name is not definitive as the source of the legend.

“Bloody Mary” is also the name of a short story complied by author S.E. Schlosser, who recorded local ghost tales in “Spooky Pennsylvania”. The story takes its name from an old folk tale set in the Harrisburg area, involving a witch who stole the youth from the townspeople’s daughters. When she was captured and killed, she proclaimed a curse and said that anyone who looked in a mirror and said her name would be visited by her spirit, which would come to exact revenge. Other areas of the country have similar legends.

Casting the Bloody Mary spell is not wise. In most versions of the legend, the person casting the spell will suffer great misfortune. Like the identity of the ghost, the specific misfortune varies. The ghost may kill or disfigure the summoner in a number of gruesome ways, or the summoner can be trapped forever inside the mirror world. There are also a few variations on the legend in which the apparition is friendly or may provide information about the future. This divination based version is a popular game at teenage girls’ slumber parties. Even the name or action can change.

While less common, a spell can also be cast using an alternate name such as Mary Worth, by taunting the spirit with “I stole your baby”, or by spinning in circles. Add 1 part Melon Liqueur, 1/2 part Yellow Chartreuse herbal liqueur and 1/2 part Ginger Liqueur into a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain into Collins glass and fill with ginger beer.

Coat the bottom of a highball glass with 1/2 oz grenadine. Add ice and 1 oz of black cherry vodka. Fill with cola. Garnish with cherries.

Combine 2 ounces Blavod black vodka with 1/2 ounce Chambord raspberry liquor in a cocktail shaker. Shake well.

Ancient vampire remains

Vampires have become a tale and character today. Used mostly in books and movies, not many actually believe in their existence. They have become a popular character type and that is as far as it goes today. Not too long ago, though, people actually did believe in their existence. They really thought they walked the earth and would harm them in the dead of night. This led to certain rituals being performed, like staking the dead body before it could walk again. In Bulgaria, evidence of this type of ritual has been found in the form of an actual body with a stake through its chest. Two skeletons, in fact, have been dug up with the iron stakes still stuck through their chest. The Bulgarian people believed that, if they did not do this, those people would get up at night begin harming the innocent villagers who lived there. People today may know this as untrue, but that was not a common fact then. The villagers wanted to protect their loved ones, and these skeletons are proof that they tried to do just that.

These skeletons were unearthed in Sozopol, which is near the Black Sea, and clearly show iron stakes pierced through the chests. Hammered down to ensure that the bodies would not leave their eternal grave, this done to people who were believed to have done horrible things in their lives. Villagers did believe that the deceased would drink their blood, much like what any person today believes a vampire does. These are not tales and stories to them, though. When the two skeletons found were impaled by the iron stake, it was to ensure they would not return. This was a real fear to them and was done in several other places. In fact, they are not the only skeletons that were found with a stake through their chest. Even in 2004, six skeletons were found nailed to their coffins. This was more than just a myth to these people, they wanted to ensure that no vampires would leave their grave.
These vampire stories were a major part of lives in Bulgaria. They were not children’s entertainment then, much like it is now, they were actual stories that brought about fear and paranoia amongst villagers. The most popular tale about vampires is about Romanian count Vlad Dracula who drank his enemies blood.
