Ollerton hopes to establish annual St George's fancy dress parade

The recent success of St George's Day celebrations in Ollerton in Nottinghamshire, three days after St George's Day itself, has seen the town hoping to make the fancy dress extravaganza an annual event.

On Sunday April 26, thousands of locals turned up to enjoy the sunshine along with a parade, hog roast and array of knights and dragons celebrating the patron saint St George. The event is now in its fourth year and, after proving popular yet again, organisers hope to secure its place as a favourite and regular annual Ollerton fixture.

Local community website Chad reported that spectators were rewarded with music and entertainment from The Forester Morris Men as well as stilt walkers, knights and dragons. The parade started at the Town Hall and a number of onlookers displayed their patriotism in a range of English themed and St George's fancy dress costumes.

The event is organised by a voluntary group, the St George's Day Celebration Group, and attendance sees around two thousand people.

The group's secretary, John Barrows, told Chad that it was a good day for everyone who came along. He added: "We had all kinds of attractions, people giving talks on St George, a tombola, stalls and a hog roast that went down very well.

"It's a lot of hard work but hopefully we'll be back next year, Edwinstowe has got Robin Hood so we want to claim St George as our own!"
